Studio Creep

The studio and animals are my 'safe place'. Like many autistic people, I have worn a mask all my life, never daring to show my authentic self for fear that others might see my difference.

Artist Statement

Deb Salter

The studio and animals are my 'safe place'. Like many autistic people, I have worn a mask all my life, never daring to show my authentic self for fear that others might see my difference. The installation, 'Studio Creep,' is an assemblage of Late Renaissance-inspired works on paper, digital prints and video that explores the role of animals and the studio as a 'safe place' in the world for a neurodiverse individual. The spirits of animals from classical artworks manifest through charcoal, paint, and pixels; they climb down the wall and creep across the floor. This is the artist's den, an environment of safety and contentment.
